THE FANTASTICKS

Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre

A passionate fable staged in a deceptively simple commedia dell’arte style, Off Broadway's longest-running hit is the intimate tale of a boy, a girl, two scheming fathers, and the natural passages of love.  Romantic innocence is lost and friendships are strained, but the musical harvest is loving, hopeful and wise.

The Fantasticks lives up to its name!  It is the longest-running musical in history — more than 40 years.  Developed from [Edmond] Rostand's 1894 play Les Romanesques, a fine cast at Muhlenberg College shows how appealing it can be.  The actors all show a deft touch for comedy that enhances the fantasy world created by director and choreographer Shawn Churchman.  The play uses only a pianist and harpist for the orchestra, which works well with the uniformly fine singing and the intimate staging, expertly done by David Esler.
